For many years, lighting has been one of the cold storage industry’s most significant challenges. Why, traditional HID and High-Intensity Fluorescent (HIF) lighting fixtures. These types of lights have been the most common type in cold storage facilities. The biggest drawback is they have never performed well in refrigerated environments since they require too much energy, generate a lot of unnecessary heat, and cost too much to maintain.
In a cold storage environment, high intensity discharge (HID) and fluorescent fixtures are usually left on 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.
It seems like a tremendous waste, and it is. While wasteful and energy inefficient traditional lighting takes a long time to warm up in colder environments. As most have seen as a ball game at night or in a gymnasium, if the lights go out they take a while to get back to 100%. Up until recently, energy losses due to these shortcomings with traditional lighting sources were just a given. However, advances in LED lighting have changed all of this.
With advancements of LED lighting technology and controls cold storage facilities are now able to the lights on and off, as needed, without impacting lumen output or degrading of the LED light. For example, when orders need to be retrieved in the cold storage the fork lift operator comes and goes all day. With controls and using LED the lights can now turn on automatically with each time he enters the cold area and lights reach full brightness immediately. Once activity ceases the light will automatically after 30 seconds of leaving the area.
Not only do you minimize the time the LED lights are operating, they are inherently much more energy efficient than HID or HIF lighting fixtures. Additionally, since LED are not always on and can be automatically turned off, they save even more KWh by reducing the cooling load of the refrigeration system. This is called “coincidence savings”, but it does add up to real money/energy saved.
